  About

We treat adults, adolescents, and children collaboratively to ensure our view of the entire person. We seek to build on strengths rather than focus on weaknesses and past trauma.

We are committed to providing medical and psychological treatments that are supported by rigorous research in order to get our patients well as rapidly and effectively as possible. We establish diagnoses in a systematic manner, using research-level instruments. This allows us to pinpoint accurate diagnoses and discover all existing mental health issues, rather than treating the various resulting symptoms as they come up. This is critical to achieving the best results.

One thing that sets our office apart from many others is that our medical staff is pioneering the medical monitoring of our medication regimens for the safest and best informed treatment possible. Some medications used for the treatment of mental health conditions can, in a small percentage of patients, cause development of secondary medical issues. Whenever we prescribe any of these medications, the patient is referred to our on-site Metabolic Clinic for monitoring such as clinical measurements and laboratory tests.

Some mental health conditions can be treated with medications, and others require therapy from a counselor or psychologist. Sometimes a combination of both medication and therapy is needed to bring a patient back to full health. Scott P Hoopes MD & Associates offers both medication management and therapy, which allows your providers to consult together for a successful treatment plan.

Dr. Hoopes, Joyce Reiland, NP-C, and Joana Gonzales, PA-C keep abreast of the most current diagnostic and medication data in order to provide the most effective and simplest medication regimens possible.

Jon Ashton, PHD and Rand Martel, LCPC focus on effective and proven psychotherapeutic techniques to progress our patients back to their “baseline” and beyond.
And of course, nothing can happen without our courteous and efficient support staff. We love them, and we know you will too!

ABOUT OUR DOCTORS

Scott P. Hoopes, MD

Dr. Hoopes completed his undergraduate degree in Zoology and his M.A. in Classical Languages at B.Y.U. before completing his M.D. at the University of Utah. Residency took him and his young family to Portland to train in Psychiatry at the Oregon Health Sciences University. While there he elected to spend his final general psychiatry year training full time in the Child Pyschiatry Department. Thus, although he is not formally a child psychiatrist, he has had substantial training and experience in treating children. His first years of practice were at Mountain Home Air Force Base where he was Chief of Behavioral Medicine for two years. Upon discharging from the service he moved his growing family to Boise where they have lived ever since. He has practiced in Boise since 1995 and since 2003 he has only seen patients in his outpatient practice. From 1997 to 2002 he was the principal investigator for over 30 industry sponsored clinical trials in his own research organization. He returned to full time clinical practice in 2002. He has published studies on the use of topiramate in Bulimia Nervosa, lamotrigine in adolescents with Bipolar Disorder, and others. He has lectured widely on mood disoders and belongs to the speakers bureaux for Lilly, Glaxo Smith-Kline,and Bristol-Meyer Squib. He and his friend and colleague, Dawson Hedges, M.D., recently wrote Bipolar Disorder: A Clinical Guide, published by Lippincott. It is particularly gratifying for him to work with a wonderful group of clinicians, all of them good and loyal friends, in a clinic where they all share the passion to “get people well”.

Jon E. Ashton, Ph.D.

Dr. Ashton has been married for over 15 yrs and is the father of four children. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Ashton completed his undergraduate training in Psychology at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. He holds a Masters of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Indiana State University (Accredited by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy) as well as a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling Psychology from Indiana State University (Accredited by the American Psychological Association).

Dr. Ashton continued his clinical training in psychology by completing a residency in Clinical Psychology with the United States Air Force (USAF) at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center, Dayton, OH. Dr. Ashton was commissioned as an Officer in the USAF where he served his country as a Psychologist on active duty status. In September 2004, Dr. Ashton honorably completed his responsibilities in the USAF and started working in Private Practice Psychology in Boise, ID.

Dr. Ashton specializes in the treatment of Anxiety and Mood Disorders with a special interest in the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the treatment of Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Anxiety. Dr. Ashton takes a realistic approach to therapy, setting clear treatment goals that are personalized with each patient. Limitations of therapy as well as treatment expectations are well defined within the first session. Dr. Ashton believes that all therapy provided should be based upon the most recent psychological and medical research and actively engages in research of his own. Additional areas of clinical interest include marital and family therapy, medical/health psychology, and Pornography Addiction.

Rand Martel, LCPC

After fifteen years involvement in international affairs, including working undercover for a US intelligence agency, Rand earned a graduate degree in mental health counseling and marriage and family therapy from Idaho State University. Prior to that, Rand received degrees from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and the Goethe-Institut of Passau, Germany. He studied human and emotional intelligence at USAINTS in Baltimore, Maryland, and did graduate work in Eastern European political psychology at Brigham Young University.

Rand’s primary professional intrigue is drawn from “systemic traumatology” (disturbing events occurring within family systems), with subspecialties in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Acute Stress Disorder, grief and loss, as well as pornography addiction recovery. Being involved with couples, families, and individuals in their evolving efforts to find meaning and direction in their lives fuels the passion of his work. Rand states his most fulfilling therapeutic experiences are working with “normal people in abnormal situations.” Presently, he is developing a program of therapeutic research with survivors of the former Soviet-bloc, primarily East Germany and Russia .

In addition to finding his greatest joys in life with his wife and three children, personal interests for Rand include running thousands of miles, cycling even more, backpacking with his hounds (and camera) in the Idaho wild and, recently, taking up paragliding. Displaying little natural ability, Rand nonetheless finds fulfillment in considering himself a student of the classical guitar.

Joyce Reiland, NP-C

Joyce Reiland completed her undergraduate degree in Nursing at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas and her Master of Science degree in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner at Idaho State University. Joyce is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Joyce started her clinical training while active duty in US Air Force. Since then, she has worked in various clinical areas such as pediatrics, emergency and urgent care, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, allergy and dermatology, family practice, and psychiatry.

Joana Gonzales,PA-C

Joana Gonzales completed her undergraduate degree in Health Science Studies locally at Boise State University. She then moved on to earn a Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at Idaho State University. Joana is certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, and is an active member of both the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and the Idaho Academy of Physician Assistants (IAPA). Joana works very closely with Dr. Hoopes in treating patients with mental health disorders, and through our metabolic program, she monitors patients taking certain medications to ensure they don’t cause any secondary medical conditions.
